President Musharraf announced his resignation on Monday, thereby ending a nearly nine-year highly controversial career as head of state. The resignation not only saved him from what wound have been the first impeachment of a president in the history of Pakistan, but also remarkably lowered political and economic tensions with the stock market soaring and falling rupee showing some stability against the US greenback.

 

It was on October 12, 1999 that Musharraf overthrew the elected government of Nawaz Sharif and vowed to end corruption, improve the economy with an address to the nation similar to his farewell address as president: tears in his voice, a charge sheet against those who opposed him and a list of his own accomplishment.

 

In his televised address to the nation, he said that his resignation was motivated by his desire to avoid horse-trading during the process of impeachment as well as a confrontation amongst all the pillars of state namely the parliament, the judiciary and the legislature. He added that the army might, too, have been dragged into controversy, if he did not resign. This, he said, would have further compromised the stability of the country.

 

He rejected allegations that he was conspiring against the government, saying had he been conspiring against the government, the Prime Minister would have not been able to get a unanimous vote of confidence and the budget would have not been passed smoothly.  

 

In some respects he was a victim of his own success. The Musharraf era saw the emergence of a more assertive middle class, who were in the forefront of protests against his imposition of emergency rule. But towards the end of his presidential career even the economic accomplishments he could claim as his own were tarnished by the sapping negativity of months of political crisis. In July 2008 annual inflation was over 24%, while the value of the rupee fell dramatically as the long political stalemate dragged on.

Just how important Liu to the Chinese nation? Well, an insurance company has valued his legs at $ 13.5 million.

 

Yes, that’s just a teeny bit of pressure. And there’s no sign of its letting up. In June, Cuba’s Dayron Robles---wearing an oversize gold cross, a chunky watch and a pair of glasses---almost casually broke the world record that Liu had set two years earlier. Now Liu must strike gold and try to reclaim the word mark. “In China, I don’t think even the Prime Minister is as famous as he is,” says former British world champion Colin Jackson of Liu, who demolished Jackson’s world record. “There’s a lot of pressure on him to deliver that gold medal, but he has incredible competition. That must be hell for him.”

In the 1990s, SNEB entered the bridge-construction market and dedicated itself to establishing itself as the top brand Chinese bridge construction company. With this aim, we have constructed and have participated in the construction of nearly 100 river-crossing and sea-crossing bridges, such as: The Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge, The Wuhan Baishazhou Bridge, The Jinzhou Yangtze River Bridge, The Wuhan Junshan Bridge, The E’huang Yangtze River Bridge, The Ruiyang Yangtze River Bridge, The No.3 Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, The Wuhan Yangluo Yangtze River Bridge and so on. In the expressway construction market, SNEB participates the construction of Shanghai to Nanjing Expressway, Beijing to Zhuhai Expressway, Tongjiang, Heilongjiang to Sanya, Hainan Expressway. The total amount of construction reaches to 400 kilometers.

 

2005年，二航局成功挺进铁路建设市场，承建了合武铁路湖北段、洛湛铁路岑茂段、太中银铁路等项目。

 

In 2005, SNEB broke into the railway construction market, and constructed the Hefei to Wuhan Railway---Hubei Section, Luoyang to Zhanjiang Railway, Cenxi to Maoming Section, and Taiyuan to Yinchuan Railway and so on.

 

在市政、水利、环保工程领域，二航局也取得了十分突出的业绩。广西贵港航运枢纽船闸工程荣获鲁班奖。上海合流污水治理一期工程3.2标，创造了地下顶管直径最大、一次顶进距离最长、三维曲线顶进三项国内第一。

 

In municipal construction, water conservancy and environmental protection fields, SNEB has also obtained outstanding achievements. Guangxi Kuigang ship lock project won the Luban Award, which is the highest honor for a Construction Project in China. Shanghai sewage plant 1st phase project (bid No.3.2) and established three records in China: an underground dome pipe construction with the largest diameter, the longest distance of single pipe jacking, and dome pipe with three-dimension curves.

By constructing more landmark projects, SNEB has rapidly expanded its influence and promoted its competitiveness.  Its technology, administration, talented staffs, and the predominance of equipments were sufficiently utilized on the Sutong Yangtze River, which is the longest single-span cable-suspension bridge in the world; The Hangzhou Bay Bridge, which is the longest harbor-crossing bridge in the world; The Chongqing Chaotianmen Bridge, which is the longest span multiple arch bridge with rigid frame arch in the world; and the Guizhou Balinhe Bridge, which is a concrete reinforced box suspension bridge with the longest span.
